When it comes to cold food packaging, you have two types: the clamshell and the Styrofoam packaging which is used to have “to go” options for these containers. You might think they’re similar at first, but actually if you want to keep food preservation even better, you should learn to understand the difference. It could lead to possible damage of the food. You should definitely look at both types and understand which one is best for you, and by the end of this, you’ll have a good idea of what kind of packaging is good for you.
First we’ve got plastic clamshells which is usually the easiest to use of all the carded packaging. They are similar to clams in a sense, and they feature two shells which are sealed on one side, and the other one has two little clasps that let them open and close. They’re made from a few different types of materials, such as polystyrene, and polyester. They can be made with either thermoforming or injection molding to crate different shapes and sizes.
If you’ve ever gotten lunch from a hot bar or the supermarket deli, then you’ve seen these. They’re great for salads, sandwiches, cakes, fruit, and small and prepared foods. They are a god choice when it comes to the environment, and they’re the easiest to recycle because they use team clean recycling.
However, they will not keep things for as long as Styrofoam ones and they don’t tightly close it. It also isn’t good for liquids and raw meats since they’re so loose.
On the flip side we’ve got Styrofoam containers which are incredibly popular. If you’ve ever had take out from a local place, this is definitely a good option. They’re usually used for chicken wings, and other appetizers. Some supermarket to-go bars have this too, since they’re great for grabbing and going.
They are slowly being fazed out since they aren’t as good for the environment. This also has chemicals that are combined within it, so it might leech chemicals onto your food if you’re not careful.
You should definitely consider these if you’re looking to have a more budget-friendly option, if you need the container to hold the foods tightly, and of course if you’re having liquids in them. They however aren’t eco-friendly, and they typically don’t break down well. There is a chance that if you leave them for a long period of time too, they’ll leech chemicals onto the different containers, and it certainly isn’t a good idea for anyone.
The thing is, we haven’t perfected the perfect to-go container, but these are the two options. If you can use a clamshell, it might be better, but usually, due to budget and food containers, you may want to consider the Styrofoam option.
The best way to determine which one is right for you is to go look at the product, figure out of course what is best for you, and from there, get one that meets the needs of your product.
